Garage Door Motor Running But Chain Not Moving

When we push the open button the motor runs and makes sound by the chain that opens the door does not move.

If the motor hums but the chain doesn t move that indicates a problem with the motor. Those are the two blue screws. There are a number of possible causes. This process varies by manufacturer and model but many openers can be re engaged by pulling the emergency cord a second time.

If the chain or belt moves then the opener motor is ok and the problem is probably at the emergency release. The motor should be driving a chain or belt. If the cord has accidentally or purposely been pulled the automatic door opener will not work until the chain is re engaged. However the chain has completely stopped moving and by extension so has the door.

Press the remote or the wall mounted start switch listen to the motor and watch the movement of the chain. Maybe you have a broken torsion spring or the door is too heavy. In most cases the cause will be a stripped gear or a chain that has come off the sprocket. Automatic garage door opener runs but door doesn t move.

This causes the motor to run for an extensive period of time before it seems to timeout and give up. The motor will run but will not move the chain.

One garage door malfunction that is very frustrating is when it will not open. As the shoe moves into the trolley the emergency release should reset but if the release is jammed or broken that might not be happening. 2 if it is getting power then disconnect the door and then see if the chain will move. The motor will start and stop in response to button pushes like it is supposed to normally the first push starts it in one direction the 2nd reverses the direction and the 3rd will stop the motor.
