The tile council of north america recommends at least a quarter inch gap between the tile floor and the walls.
Gap between shower floor and wall tile.
So to accommodate the flooring tile many like to leave a small gap between the last row of wall tile and floor.
Similar to the gap that can exist between your wall tile and tub you may have a space between the floor and your bathtub.
By the way we highly recommend tiling the main shower wall then the side walls.
Instead fill it with an elastic material capable of sustaining the movement of the floor and the movement of the wall.
And after installing the floor tile you can install that final or first row of wall tile.
And waterproofed the shower floor and walls with wedi which by the way is very user friendly and not.
Caulking is the best choice for this application.
If your gap is smaller than 1 8 inch in width use regular caulk.
Leaving a 1 16 gap between the tub and tile will prevent the tile from cracking when the tub expands.
For example if tile is being set on the main shower wall then leave a 1 8 expansion joint between the tile edge and adjacent backer board.
Or fill the gap with grout.
Selecting the right width for grout lines on your tile project may seem unimportant compared to picking tile sizes patterns and materials.
If you have tile on the wall adjoining the tub select a caulk that matches the color of the grout.
Fill gaps larger than 1 8 inch.
Never fill this gap with grout because tile grout is not flexible.
When installing wall and floor tiles technicians place plastic spacers between each one to ensure the lines remain uniform tile spacers range in size from 1 16 inch to 1 2 inch.
Plus a 1 16 gap allows the caulk to properly fill the space and waterproof the transition between the tile and tub or shower.
I have attached a picture to give a better idea could someone please tell me what the best way is to fill these gaps and what material i should use.
This gap may widen over time as your home shifts.
Caulk between the wall and tile.
Grout between the tiles.
As with any other gap near your bathtub you ll want to close the opening to prevent any possible water damage or the onset of mold and mildew.
These gaps exist between tiles that are on the floor as well as between tiles where the floor and the wall touch.
Shower tiles should have a 1 8 joint between their edge and backer boards or adjacent tiles.
But with bathroom tile installations every detail is key.
